The mission of AiFL’s student-run internet radio station, aiflradio.com (88.3, WAIF) is to provide our Broadcasting students with a real-world environment where they can apply the skills needed to work in a modern digital broadcast station. As they progress through their curriculum, students are taught the creative and technical techniques that they can then practice through their own DJ shows, internships and in-house station management positions.

Our station has been a vehicle for our Broadcasting students to practice their craft in a realistic broadcast station environment. We began in 1990 as an on-air station with a limited range (only as far as the parking lot) and “piggy-backing” on 88.3’s frequency range. In 1996 we installed the AudioVault, a Digital Audio Radio (DAR) computer system that allows the entire station to be programmed and run automatically. Students can still run live shows, and many upper quarter students have popular weekly programs. Aiflradio.com is a unique college radio station, broadcasting 24/7 worldwide on the internet. In the past year, all of our production equipment and has been updated so that we are completely digital. Students create and edit school promos using the latest version of ProTools, write news stories using updated Associated Press news feeds and have licensed rights to commercial music to produce programming in all the popular radio formats, including Contemporary Hit radio, Alternative Rock, Jazz, Hip Hop, Classic Rock and Country. WAIF 88.3 is a student-run web radio station dedicated to connecting students in all different cultures and background with high quality music, performance and public affairs programming that informs, educates, entertains and inspires. WAIF 88.3 is also a dynamic, educational resource, providing AIFL students with valuable, real world experience in radio and median operations. |
